As you look at these real old
pictures below you will probably think that I am a surfer. Nowdays, I
bodyboard 90% of the time and surf the other 10% when it is real
big--usually with special friends who like to surf big waves. My 13 year
old son Shaun bodyboards a lot and I bodyboard with him--usually at Sandy
Beach, Big "Walls", North Shore, and sometimes Diamond Head. You won't see
any pictures of me and my personal bodyboard, because my board is real big and unique, and I don't show it
because of security reasons. I've surfed Hawaii for 40 years, I'm real big and I used to be a
champion sprinter swimmer--so suffice to say I catch my share of
waves--either bodyboarding or board surfing..
Kenu Hawaii LLC's President is Ken Brown.
Ken has been making bodyboards since 1983 (27 years!!!) and has made or has had a
hand in making over 20,000 bodyboards. Many thousands of these he made all
by himself. He was the production manager at Turbo Surf Designs
Hawaii--if you have an old Turbo board--Ken probably made it.
He has also made over 400 rescue sleds for a Hawaii
company- usually all by himself. He is well known to Hawaii bodyboarders and
to the Hawaii Lifeguards and others that have used his products.
Ken comes from a family of
craftsmen/artists that started with his World War2 P-51 fighter pilot dad
and his well known artist / innovator brother Russ "Captain Turbo"
Brown-- the original owner of Turbo Surf Designs Hawaii. Ken has many
interests such as flight, writing songs, computers, watercraft, woodwork,
etc.
He has invented quite a few things and
most of them have been because of necessity- no one was making what he
needed. His family bodyboard (not shown for security reasons) was made
over 25 years ago and was way ahead of its time- and still turns heads
when he uses it at Waikiki beach with his kids.
His rescue sleds are super strong and
uses a special sealing technique to seal the seams. Hawaii
lifeguards and others have used these original sleds for years and are still using
them- they practically last forever. His bodyboards
are way different then anything you have ever seen- with materials that no
one else uses because it takes too much time and skill.
His new
foam gliders
were a result of being fed up with trying to find something cool he could
play safely with his young son and friends- so he had to make it himself.
Ken's quality of work is very good and
he makes his products to last- no scrimping on cheap materials or cutting
corners. When he makes something he doesn't want to see it
again-unless he sees it at the beach with a happy customer!!
